Rough figures I know but my point is just because Heatley is a buyout candidate for this year still doesn't equate to the tens of millions Luongo will cost without much of anything to show for it.
1) Trade him to a cap-floor team when his salary drops
2) Take into consideration what you are going to pay a starting goalie (Wild paid Backstrom 24 million/4 years... 4 years of Lu only costs you 3 million more..)
Lets say you pay Luongo his 6.7 million salary for the next 5 years (33.5 million total).
What would you pay over the next 5 years a starting goaltender regardless? (lets say 5 million a year... which is probably on the low side).
So Luongo at 33.5 for the next 5 years, or
Goaltender B for 25 million over the next 5 years PLUS Heatleys 5 million salary.
Really any decent starting goaltender you sign is going to command a decent salary..
