Dominant hand guides the stick while stickhandling/pokechecking. When you shoot, there is a push/pull action...you push with your lower hand and pull with your upper hand. The dominant hand should be on the top of the stick.
In the US you see most players as RH, because they are told that since they are RH in life, they should shoot RH.
The ratio between LH:RH shooters in the NHL is about 70:30 LH to RH.
