The Colorado Avalanche surprised everyone who followed the NHL, selecting center Nathan MacKinnon over defenseman Seth Jones, who fell to the Oilers. Jonathan Drouin, long touted as the third overall pick, fell to the hometown Canadiens, as the Bruins selected hulking center Aleksander Barkov. Many teams in the top-10 addressed their needs, as Phoenix got a productive yet defensively responsible center, Toronto has a potential first line center, the Ducks pick up a sniper for the left side, and Tampa Bay selected a puck-moving partner for Victor Hedman.

Quote:
We're very happy with who we drafted this year, gaining both quality and quantity at the same time. We came in with a plan, and got who we wanted to.
Our gamble paid off, in acquiring picks during the season. We were also pleased to draft some prospects that were projected to go higher.
- GM Marc Bergevin
