Problem is that in a world where 35 year old Mark Streit gets 4 years at 5.25 a year, Kris Letang is going to get PAID.

Next years Pens defense also depends on whether Shero turns to dealing from D to insure that he gets value for assets who are not in the long term plans.
If we keep Letang, which I still think the more likely outcome, there could be a lot of reason to first of all deal Niskanen, but also to consider dealing Engelland who has one year left on his bargain deal, before he will inevitably be able to demand a lot more. That is the main value of Engelland right now, that he is a hell of a lot better than a 600k D-man should be.

We already have Despres and Bortuzzo who are ready to play, and Dumoulin looks solid for third pairing spot duty also. Then Harrington, Maatta, Puliot and Samuelsson waiting in Wilkes Barre.

Orpik Martin
Despres Letang
Murray Bortuzzo
Dumoulin

I think Murray helped our PK big time after his arrival, and I wouldn't be at all opposed to keep him on, if his salary demands are meaningful.
