Robert Lang has never been a top player... he's always been inconsistent and with the upcoming CBA strike, I highly doubt any team would take on a $5.0M contract (w/ 3 full years left), especially since the player is not a proven playoff performer (22 points through 51 games). The guy's overachieving... most of his points are coming on the powerplay (24 of 46), you can put a guy like Darcy Tucker on a PP unit with Jaromir Jagr, Peter Bondra, and Sergei Gonchar and he'll manage to do as well as Lang is now.
You're right, Lang wasn't a top player in Pittsburgh. He wasn't the top line pivot, Straka was. And when Straka wasn't, Kip Miller of all people was. Lang played 2nd line C, sometimes even 3rd or 4th depending on his play. So saying that Lang was only able to average 67 points per game with Jagr, Straka and Kovalev is completely misleading. He hardly ever played on a line with any of them, except a few times on the 5 Forward PP unit they had there for a bit. Lang has never been the go-to guy until he came to Washington. While he was a bit of a wash his first season in Washington, this season he is locked in at 1st line pivot on both even strength and PP units. And while he has cooled off a little since Xmas, he's still leading the league in scoring (tied right now with Naslund and Kovalchuk). While Bondra and Jagr have had their ups and downs in productivity this season, Lang has been cruising at a steady point per game clip.
Sure, he may cool down even more and falter in the long run, but as of now, he's our most consistent player on the team. Even when the rest of the team is slumping and dogging it, he still produces. That is not inconsistency.
