Put as much money as you can afford into your skates. Bottom of the line skates are usually pretty bad. If you are a beginner to ice, I recommend something like the bauer X3.0's (I believe today's equivalent is the X50) those are the skates I have. I have gone to countless open skates and played hockey in them a dozen times. Obviously, go with a boot that fits to your foot, but I recommend somewhere in the 150 and above for a first pair.
