I think Gagner's true value as hockey player in terms of $$$'s is $3.75 million being a fairly one dimensional offensive center, with not much in the way of physicality or ability to win faceoffs and being a little below average defensively. He is still improving every year and I think he would be good value at $4.25 on a long deal (overprice early but underpriced closer to the end of the deal), $4.5 is a little bit of a gamble but probably fair, at $4.75 he becomes a little too pricey for what he currently brings and what I foresee him bringing in the future. At the $4.75 price point I would look into trading him and trying to sign a UFA center who has a bit more polish on him. Although the UFA would probably cost a bit more the added benefit of getting a good asset from trading Gagner should mitigate some of the detriment of less cap flexibility.
