There's a reason no players really sign for 1 or 2 year contracts. Bridge contracts suck for the players.

In a world of guaranteed contracts, these guys are looking to maximize their years because there is always a risk of injury.

Bridge contracts exist for players who haven't quite broken out yet but expect to do so in the future. GMs keep them cheap for a couple of seasons and, in return, young players get an opportunity to demonstrate their worth, often getting big-time raises.

Read is in a similar situation, but because he's not an RFA, there's no reason to take a bridge contract.

Since he's a UFA, there are plenty of teams that will take a risk on him for big money at a number of years.

He will be looking for 4.50-5.50 over 4-5 years probably, if not 7.

Actually, since he's at a perfect age for this, you could feasibly get him cheaper on a 7/8 year contract. (Flyers could offer him 8 to re-sign him.)

5.5 + 5.5 + 5.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 3.5 + 3.0 + 3.0

CAP HIT: 4.375

The truth is that Read is going to want to get paid, he's going to want long-term, and the Flyers would be much better off locking him up sooner rather than later if they feel he is in their long-term plans.

If you lock him up right now, you could potentially get him around 3.75-4.00.
