We were a pretty damn good puck possession team in 2011-2012. Smith flourished for a brief time playing that game, and a lot of us hoped that his game would translate from the NCAA/WC to the NHL. After he missed that empty net he sort of fell off. His confidence was shot. His conditioning didn't appear to be at the level it needed to be at. Like 101st said, he isn't as strong on the puck as he needs to be to be effective in this league, especially in the former-Central. The West is a very tough, physical conference that doesn't allow much time and space for a guy to simply float around waiting for his chance. The East isn't much easier in that regard, but it's a bit more open.
