I think puck possession should be the Preds main focus this year. Adding a top-6 forward and Barkov/Drouin will certainly help that.
But we were good about possessing the puck for much of the season, and Smith still fell off. He shows he can still play well on the PP (7 points last season out of his total of 12 came on the PP; tied for third on the team). That tells me he is good when his time and space aren't compromised nearly as much. He needs to learn to battle to get into areas rather than waiting for the space and the puck to come to him at the same time.
