Torts was 100% correct about Richards and the lockout

“I worry about our older guys like Richie [Brad Richards] and Rupper [Mike Rupp] who aren’t playing. It’s tough and they need to stay on top of it, because when we get into this, the best 20 guys are going to play on opening night,” he said.

Richards didn't play. He hung around New York not doing much. And why not? He got an eight million dollar check on July 1. Richards was thinking about playing in Europe after the holidays but all of the spots in Europe were already taken and the lockout was settled in early January.

Richards was coddled and protected by Torts all season until it was obvious that Richards wasn't of any help. He was dropped to the 4th line with Kreider and Asham. Richards was dropped from the line-up all together later.

The other side of the argument is the free agent market stinks and the Rangers are better off with Richards totally ignoring the huge risk of injury. The cap will be $80M in the 3-4 years so the Rangers can afford the bad contract. Wonderful thinking.
