If you could get Florida or Tampa Bay into the discussion, then something might be workable. It should be pretty clear from the fact that the Avs have been pretty adamant about staying in the top 3, that they are risk adverse (going for nearly sure things even if other options might be better in the long run - i.e., Seth Jones). Because the 2014 pick has no certainty to it, the Avs would not accept it to drop out of the top 3. I'm not saying it's not fair value - just that the Avs won't do it.

But here's the other point: there's no way Calgary should make the offer. Why potentially lose out on a solid pick this year and Ekblad next year just for MacKinnon this year? You need to fill out a team and putting all your eggs into a single basket at this point would prolong your rebuild.
