Playing with fate is like playing with fire. Maybe you don't burn your house down. Maybe you do. That's what the Rangers are playing with now.

We have center depth without Richards---Stepan, Brassard, Boyle, Lindberg, Miller. We'd also have $6.7 mil more of cap space available and FWIW we could bring in someone a lot of cheaper and much more capable of playing a bottom 6 center position than Richards or even Brassard. Personally I don't see Richards earning 2nd line ice time over Brassard as it is and the main reason for that is s-k-a-t-i-n-g. So the question for all those hopeful that he'll make a big comeback is what happens if he doesn't?--what happens if Lindberg is ready to go and plays in Hartford instead just because Richards used to be a star and has the big contract?--and then what happens if we're stuck with his cap hit for the 6 years after next year because he got hurt in the meantime? That's a $6.7 mil cap hit handicap for us to start every season with. That's money that will be needed to keep the core of the team together and every year will begin with that handicap and maybe someone each and every year (including young guys) will have to leave because of that.
