He's also above average defensively. You wouldn't know it reading some of the cretinous post Boston series evaluations, but he is. He's strong, fast, physical, nasty, great at closing down players one-on-one off the rush. Where he can struggle is with the odd poor decision in danger areas, which is hardly uncommon for a dynamic 26 year old playing 25+ minutes a night, especially one playing with 3rd pairing calibre players who can't insulate an occasional gaffe.

Your standard for a defenseman making ~7 mil per is unreasonable given the UFA climate too. Karlsson and Doughty, who have both struggled with consistency, got 6.5 and 7 mil as RFAs. Weber and Suter have close to 8 mil cap hits, but those are artificially lowered due to the cheap years tacked on at the end. These guys are making 10+ mil over the first 8 years of their deals. Geezers who are worse offensively and defensively than Letang like Gonchar and Streit are getting 5+ mil on 35+ contracts.

So there's the detailed report on why your assessment of Letang's deal is off-base. In other words, your Lidstrom comparison is hopelessly out of date. You might as well be talking about how much Ray Bourque made for all the relevance it has.
