You bring up a good point with this last statement.
Everyone here's trying to acquire the perfect piece - we're trying to put together a team that has elite defense, elite goaltending, and elite offense.
But in the cap world, that's just not going to happen.
Every team has issues:
Pittsburgh - Great O, solid D, no grit and shaky goaltending.
Rangers - great D, goaltending, can't score.
Boston - solid D, great goalie, offense meh.
Caps - O's great, D-meh
Even Chicago - last 4 years - Cup, flameout, flameout, cup.
We could do this for everyone.
Nashville - Elite D, elite goalie - can't score, the farm's empty.
The idea that if we don't acquire the big time PPG 1st line forward than it's worthless even trying is silly, and ignores the reality of building a team in the NHL. We can debate if those guys are even available, but that's another topic.
Are guys like MacArther, Filppula, Clarkson, Stalberg the instant answer to all our problems? Nope. But you can't just throw your arms up and say "well, those guys won't score at a PPG clip, the season is shot, might as well bring on more Yip".
This is still a tournament sport. Once you get in it's all about who gets hot (2012 final had an 8 seed vs 6 seed), not who has the most PPG guys.
