Sure, but there is no part of the Oilers defense that is currently an area of strength.
Yes, the pipeline is filled with high level LHD but none of those guys are ready to replace what Smid currently brings to the team.
You can't replace Smid with a rookie and hope to get positive results this season.
Also, just because you're dealing from an area of strength doesn't mean that you deal that player for lesser value. That's not good asset management.
