During the 2010 playoffs, IIRC, Ference was playing with a badly injured groin, and he underwent an experimental procedure in which blood is withdrawn, whirled on a centrifuge, and injected back into the body at the injured point. He never said a word about it until much later. (I saw an interview in which he described the procedure, noting that the blood was the consistency of cake batter. Imagine getting that procedure done and then going out and playing hockey. He did note somewhat wryly that it was fairly painful.) And he never used it as an excuse.

This year, he was playing with a fractured bone in his foot, and again, it flew under the radar.
