he gets overshadowed by shanahan and larry murphy, and rightfully so, but an underrated missing piece is joey kocur. in 1996 claude lemieux breaks draper's face and they go on to win the series and the cup. christmas of '96 the wings pick up kocur, maybe the most feared guy of his era. suddenly the avs don't run around playing tough guy as much, or at least when they do so they know the wings have gone from a skill team with a bunch of tougher guys that didn't mind standing up for themselves to a tough team with a nuclear option on the bench. the psychological edge was gone. kocur didn't actually do much other than play his fourth line shift, score the odd goal, and sit on the bench, but he didn't have to. in game four, when he dumped eric messier for no reason, it was almost like a twelfth grader tossing a ninth grader telling him and his buddies to cut it out. and that, on top of just being there (he played all six games of the WCF), was enough.
