Larmer was also a Keenan guy from his Chicago days.

The Rangers made some very good deadline deals to bolster their lineup. But they were underperforming until the November trade for Larmer. He had 60 points in 69 games, then a 16 point playoff campaign. None of the other guys they picked up scored at that pace either in the regular season or in the playoffs. He was also very solid defensively and trusted by Keenan to be on the ice for the final faceoff in Game 7. He was just the perfect guy to be on a team led by Messier and Iron Mike.
