You have to go through your division to make the Conference Final, so the top seeds don't really factor unless they meet in the Conference Final.

A quick potential example of the East this year:

Metropolitan Division:

1) Pens - 105
2) Flyers - 97
3) Rangers - 95

4) Isles - 94
5) Caps - 93

6) Jackets - 86
7) Canes - 75
8) Devils - 70

Atlantic Division:

1) Bruins - 108
2) Wings - 99
3) Sens - 92

4) Leafs - 91
5) Habs - 88
6) Bolts - 87
7) Panthers - 80
8) Sabres - 74

The top 3 teams in each division automatically make the playoffs. The next two highest point totals also make the playoffs, in this case the Isles and Caps. The highest seed in the conference (here, Boston) would play the lowest wildcard (Caps) and the other division winner (Pens) would play the other wildcard.

So the first round playoff matches would be:

Pens vs Isles & Flyers vs Rangers (winners play each other)

Bruins vs Caps & Wings vs Sens (winners play each other)
