I don't think Bowman's the kind of GM to give huge contracts to goaltenders, but that's not exactly how it went down with Niemi. Hjalmarsson received an offer-sheet from San Jose, which made their cap situation even worse. If Chicago could have gotten Hammer for around 2.5M, they would have been able to sign Niemi to the arbitrators reward. It would have been him or Ladd.
