You need to look at other teams that have expiring contracts or cap dumps that will be able to resign Vanek to get true value. That teams just is not the Blues. Young cost controlled assets are needed in St Louis.
This is why the Perron/MPS + 2nd trade really is a great return for the Blues. They got a talented young and cost-controlled player with upside who gives the team some salary cap flexibility (to be used to re-sign Pietro and already Stewart). And this is the same reason that Vanek in trade is not a likely scenario.

As a deadline rental....maybe that's more doable, but it probably wouldn't be with an eye toward re-signing him. And for the Blues to trade their valuable cost-controlled assets in order to facilitate it, that's a suicidal move for the team's future.

The Blues organization feels like they are in the first couple years of a window of being a contender. This isn't a one-year shot. They're not going to sell-out to eke out a little more offensive productivity at the expense of cutting this window short. It makes far more sense for them to groom Tarasenko to be what Vanek would be to the team, in the next couple years, and at a fraction of the cost.
