The Rangers have too many forwards. Sather talked about the young guys on July 3. The day after Kristo was acquired. According to Jim Cerny, the Rangers brass is very high on Kristo.
Vigneault said the same thing when he was hired
Something has to give. The maximum active roster can only be 23 players.
You are probably right
Therefore - in typical NYR fashion - we will now see something like this unfold (from outta the blue):
NYR acquire Ales Hemsky & Corey Potter (AHL depth) in a trade from Edmonton for Taylor Pyatt, Arron Asham, Marek Hrivik and a 3rd rounder. Edmonton retains half the salary and cap hit for Hemsky
NYR sign Derek Stepan to a 2 year bridge deal ~ $3M
One of the NYR RW young guns (Kristo, Fast or Miller) makes the team out of camp
Hagelin & Callahan are indeed placed on the LTIR to start season to free up capspace
They invite up one of Haley or Mashinter to start year on the big club for some added toughness
When Callahan and/or Hagelin are ready (expected by some sources to be sometime in November or in effect after more than 10 games have been played qualifying them for LTIR) - a trade will have to be made. That much is clear. But it will be a head scratcher!
Rick Nash ($7.800m) / Derek Stepan ($3.000m) / Ales Hemsky ($2.500m—50.0%)
Chris Kreider ($1.325m) / Brad Richards ($6.667m) / Mats Zuccarello ($1.150m)
