Goring is the first guy to come to mind, I think. Hard to imagine this now, but the Isles were a team in need of direction prior to 1980. Veteran direction that is.

Shanahan is another of those missing pieces but I'm not sure was any bigger than when Murphy was picked up. Both played key roles in 1997 for the Wings.

Bill Guerin in 2009 for the Pens. He was old then, but played out of his mind for his age and gelled rather well with Crosby. When he was picked up at the trade deadline you didn't think much of it, but he racked up 15 points that spring.
