Markov is a no brainer. Finished top 5 in the league among dmen for scoring. Reduce his icetime gradually and he's good for another 2-3 years at least.
If Diaz shows some improvement in his overall game, keep him as well and round out the d-squad with some thoughness (Tinordi, UFA or trade).
A D-squad with Subban, Markov, Gorges, Emelin, Diaz and Tinordi is OK. Not great, but still very fine for the next 2-3 years.
You can look for improvements/depth via trades or from within (Beaulieu, if he gets there).
Exactly. Winning teams need a strong balance of skills. A healthy Diaz and Markov give us some much-needed passing/PP/transition skills, plus Diaz is becoming a very good shooter.
Habs could go from 'good' to 'great' D with a bigger presence around our own net, which is an easier fix than finding a defenceman with Diaz's skills.
