Pack's LaBarbera named week's best

The American Hockey League announced today that Hartford Wolf Pack goaltender Jason LaBarbera has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending January 11, 2004. In three games, LaBarbera stopped 80 of 82 shots and posted two shutouts as the Wolf Pack extended its unbeaten streak to five games.

As Hartford embarked on a three-game road trip, LaBarbera, in his second full AHL season, made 31 saves on Thursday night to help the Wolf Pack to a 1-0 overtime victory at the Toyota Center in Houston. A night later, he stopped 23 shots in a 2-2 tie at San Antonio, and Sunday, LaBarbera logged 26 saves in a 5-0 win at Manchester, finishing the week with a record of 2-0-1, a 0.63 goals against average and a .976 save percentage.

In recognition of his achievement, LaBarbera will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to the Hartford Jr. Wolf Pack in LaBarberaís name.

A third-round draft choice by the New York Rangers in 1998, LaBarbera is 15-5-4 on the season, and currently leads the American Hockey League in wins (15) and shutouts (six) while ranking third in GAA (1.61) and ninth in save percentage (.931). The native of Prince George, B.C., who turns 24 next week, owns a career AHL record of 41-34-11 in 99 appearances, all with Hartford. LaBarbera also has played in two NHL games with the Rangers, making his first NHL start earlier this season at Colorado.

Other nominees for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Bridgeport goaltender Wade Dubielewicz, Cincinnati left wing Chris Kunitz, Cleveland defenseman Doug Murray, Grand Rapids right wing Jiri Hudler, Hamilton right wing Jozef Balej, Hershey center Eric Perrin, Houston goaltender Kyle Kettles, Lowell goaltender Brent Krahn, Manchester center Esa Pirnes, Philadelphia right wing Kirby Law, Rochester right wing Milan Bartovic, San Antonio left wing Eric Beaudoin, Springfield defenseman Mike Wilson, St. Johnís center Nathan Barrett, Syracuse right wing Kent McDonell, Toronto defenseman Doug Lynch and Utah center Jarrod Skalde
