if you want to specifically targeting wrists muscles, here's what you can do without using weights:

Tape a towel (well maybe not a towel, but a piece of cloth) to add 2-5 inches in circumference around the stick.

By doing this, when you'll grab the stick, it will allow you to develop a better/stronger grip along with more powerful muscles.

Wrist rolling with weights isnt entirely necessary but it surely is not something that will hurt in the long run.

As for someone else mentioning developing a stronger core: there is absolutely no doubt that a stronger core will allow you to exert more power.
