1958 Television in Canada

July 1, 1958 saw the CBC, Canada's national broadcaster, extend its signal across Canada.

Television signals were readily available in urban centers, not so in rural areas. Globally in about 1/9 or 1/10 households.

Tended to be the family Christmas or holiday gift. Popular shows or events were watched on a neighbourhood basis. The big furniture stores would leave the sets running in the windows. People would congregate to watch and hopefully buy eventually.
