It's a chance for new guys to bond and adapt to the pro lifestyle or get introduced to North American hockey or some of the lesser prospects to stand out. It's a chance for the scouts to get a look at some guys on tryout that they think might be deserving of a contract. Do you seriously think Sather and Clark and Gorton sit and put together this roster trying to build a "good" team?
They care because this is a reflection of where our current prospect pool stands (with a few exceptions) and how those players stack up against other organizations. In the grand scheme of things, the tournament is meaningless, but at the same time, it's important to see these kids matched up against higher quality competition. It brings the potential future of the organization together, and if they get shellacked, it reflects badly on them as well as the people who put the team together.

If you think Clark and Gorton don't care about fielding a competitive team, then you're just kidding yourself.
