We have $2.85M in bonuses counting against next year so far. So we have an additional $2M in cap space to use this year. The contract can be set up as mostly bonus money. Ie what Boston did with Iginla's contract: $1,800,000 salary + $4,200,000 (easily attainable bonuses) = $6,000,000.

Plus we can send down a player like Larsen to save another $900K in cap space. ($1,025M - ($550k + $375k)) = $100k cap hit and $900k cap space. http://www.capgeek.com/new-cba/

The Oilers have at least $4.25M to sign a UFA.
The Oilers are already over the 64.3M, and are using the performance cushion, but they have so many bonuses they aren't allowed to go over the cap by the full amount of their bonuses, which means it's a bit more difficult to get into overage penalties than it is for other teams. Teams only push performance bonuses into the next year if they are earned, and if the bonuses result in the team going over the cap in the current year.
