Anyone else a little disturbed by Detroit's extending of Kronwall's contract? $3 million a year for him makes Hamhuis worth what now, $5 million a year? This is a huge risk for them, but what does that value do to the young defenseman on the verge of RFA status?
I have a feeling this is going to have a cascading effect that leads to the next wave of RFA defenseman getting big money, L-T deals. And that means that when Hammer, Suter, Weber, etc. all come up for their RFA deals (looking more specifically at Suter/Weber), they are going to be expecting a lot of money.
My hope is that when the next round of young RFA defensemen comes around, more sensible deals are signed and a nice template is set. My fear is that Kronwall's risky contract will become the expectations of the young RFA defensemen. And that we'll have to sign Weber and Suter to similar deals. God forbid more because when their contracts expire, they'll have proven a lot more than Kronwall.
