I didn't have to pay more but I seem to recall there was less time to use the O-Train transfer than there was with the regular bus transfers or you had to turn it over to the bus driver.

Just found this:

If you transfer to a bus, give your O-Train ticket to the bus operator. Request a bus transfer only if you need to take another bus route or if you’re on an articulated bus.

So I guess you can ask for another transfer.
