I think they were 0-0 at the end of October .

Their first 14 were 4-8-2 so pretty close, but they bottomed out at 5-12-2 before a string of 9 out of 10 went to overtime and they earned points in 11 of 12 to improve to 13-12-6. Then they were in the fight and continued to play well from there. They also had another hot streak later on winning 8 of 9 and overall went 19-5-5 after that bad start to end up just shy of the playoffs.

I think the moral is moreso that even playing at a 19-5-5 clip in the second half they couldn't erase the bad start and earn a playoff spot. That's why this mess they got themselves into is perilous.
