One of the big points is that a deeper hollow, e.g. 3/8s, 7/16s etc will give you physically larger edges at the cost of glide. It will take less energy to, for example, hit your edges on crossovers but require you to push off harder on your forward stride. If your agility & edgework feels really good but you seem to be biting into the ice too much at times, use a shallower hollow. If you've used 1/2, move to 9/16 or 5/8.
