Winters make a huge difference on snow. Starting and stopping on ice aren't really too much different, but you have so much more lateral control. Studs are awesome to have in this current weather and the mountains, but generally are overkill in edmonton.

I can go the speed limit with studs on at all times unless it's whiteout conditions and I'm out-driving my headlights.

For all worried about the noise with studded: my hakkepillita (sp?) 7 tires sound like they're on gravel when I hit dry roads. Most good companies have fixed the noise issue.
