Addresses one problem

Clearly this trade addresses one significant problem we've had this season: the power play.

And from the way the negotiations went it seems that Sather was trying for a mega-deal to include Kolzig and probably a serviceable d-man. When he couldn't swing that, he kept his chips to make those deals and made the Caps eat an awful lot. Given their contribution towards Jagr and taking Carter they've saved several million a year and have a much poorer version player for a similar role.

Is the trade the answer, of course not, but looking at it value for value it seems like a steal. Carter failed here as a top 2 line right winger. The only way this deal backfires is if a hard cap materializes in the future.
