Krug has speed that Gus can only dream of though. The guy is a little road runner out there.

I don't really care what Gus decides to do. He could choose to play better when he's in, for one thing. Or he could leave. Realistically, even if Kimmo leaves, he could still be on the outside looking in next year too - with Alt looking ready, Manning and Lauridsen there too, possible trades or UFAs, and Ghost, Hagg and Morin coming in the next couple years.

I like Gus' spunk, but he is not a proven top 4 Dman, and he's not a PP specialist. A good argument could be made that you don't keep a smurf 3rd pairing guy on D unless he's a PPQB - esp. not a team with the smallish Timonen and Streit already in the top 4. I believe the 3rd pairing should be able to be a PK unit. Gus can't do that. Whether Luke and Mesz can is also a question.
Mez is a better option when healthy, but he hasn't been healthy for a long time. I'm not convinced that he'll ever fully recover from the onslaught of injuries he's had the past two years. One average stretch (at best) of 10-15 games isn't convincing anyone else either.
