Lets say he went 5th overall instead (arbitrary number) and he wasn't ready for the NHL so he went back to junior for a year. And then the next season he against wasn't ready for the NHL so went to the AHL and got 40 points in 77 AHL games. This would probably been seen as adjusting to tougher competition and the player would still hold pretty high value. With the way he's been talked about I think some people would rather have the guy with 40 points in 77 games in the AHL rather than Yakupov.
Yakupov has 40 points in 77 NHL games, he is still 20 years old. He had a great 1st season with 31 points in 48 games. Now he has hit a sophomore slump. COMPLETELY NORMAL.
Seguin had 22 points in his first 74 NHL games, look at him now.
Kessel had 29 points in his first 70 NHL games, look at him now.
Perry had 25 points in his first 56 NHL games, look at him now.
Stamkos had 46 points in his first 79 NHL games, look at him now.
