Sleeping Canadiens Arise To Rout Penguins, 12-0 MONTREAL (AP) -

The Pittsburgh Penguins might have been better off letting sleeping Canadiens lie: The Penguins downed Montreal 3-1 at Pittsburgh Wednesday night in the. opener of a home-and-home series with the defending National Hockey League champions. The defeat, which snapped a 14-game Canadiens unbeaten string, also marked the end of a streak in which right wing Guy Lafleur had scored a point in' 12-consecutive games. Well, Lafleur wasted no time starting another streak, and neither did the Canadiens. Lafleur scored after just 2:06 had been played — igniting a 12-0 rout of the Penguins and producing the season's highest goal production. Mario Tremblay, Yvon Lambert and Doug Risebrough had two goals and an assist each. Guy Lafleur, Mark Napier, Jacques Lemaire, Pierre Larouche, Rick- Chartraw and Pierre Mondou contributed single goals. Defenseman Guy Lapointe earned four assists as every Canadien on the ke — except netminder Michel Larocque — earned at least one scoring point. Larocque stopped 25 shots for his second ' shutout of the year. For Risebrough, who had missed 17 games since suffering a shoulder injury on Jan. 6, the contest marked a successful return to action.

In the other NHL games, the New York Islanders downed the St. Louis Blues 6-1, the Chicago Black Hawks downed the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 and the Vancouver Canucks 'blanked the Colorado Rockies 3-0. The Canadiens took 37 shots on goalies Denis Herron - who beat them Wednesday — and Greg Millen in remaining unbeaten at home against the Penguins since Jan. 2, 1969. Islanders 6, Blues 1 Mike Bossy scored a goal for the ninth consecutive game, leading the Islanders to their 13th consecutive home victory over the Blues. His 48th goal of the year brought the secondyear right wing within one game of the 10-game record shared fay Andy Bathgate of the New York Rangers and Bobby Hull of the Chicago Black Hawks. Black Hawks 4, Sabres 2 Bob Murray scored twice, carrying Chicago past Buffalo for the second night 'and giving the Black Hawks their fourth straight victory. The loss was the Sabres' fourth in a row. Canucks 3, Rockies 0 Goals by Ron Sedlbauer, Stan Smyl and Lars Lindgren. backed Gary Bromley's first shutout of the year and helped Vancouver hand Colorado its eighth straight loss. PENGUINS STUMBLE — Montreal goalie Michel Larocque keeps his eyes on the action after a collision with two Pittsburgh Penguins, Orest Kindrachuck and Kick Kehoe (17) during first-period action Thursday night in Montreal. The Canadiens, losers to the Wednesday, got more than enough revenge in a romp. (AP Laserphojo);
