Belgican makes some good points. On paper, or if you aren't following the Avs very closely, it would seem the easiest thing is to trade Sauve for an experienced backup.

I don't think the Avs will keep whoever they might get for a backup, and I really doubt they would move Sauve in any such deal because he's still got a big upside. He just has no experience. The whole point here is that Avs have to be very happy with Aebischer's play, but with such a packed roster and high expectations, need to prepare in case something happens to him come playoff time, whether it be injury or severe jitters. They aren't going to want anyone coming in for more than the rest of this season, surely they are content with the young goaltenders they have in Aeby, Sauve and Budaj. It's just that potential doesn't mean a thing in the playoffs, and it's wise to hedge your bets by having someone who's been through some battles waiting in the wings. Or for them.
