Yep, if the Canucks could get O'Neill for a similar package(centered around Koltsov and the 1st), I'd do that first. O'Neill is a better fit for the Canucks IMO(grittier, cheaper, younger, good friends with Bertuzzi, RH'ed shot), but I would have no problems making a deal for Satan if something with Carolina couldn't be worked out.

I don't think we need Zhitnik though - unless we *have* to move a dman, but personally I'd rather keep Sopel or Allen instead... what about Malik?? he's a great deal younger and cheaper than Zhitnik and has played well for us at times on our #2 pairing?? if Zhitnik is just going to be dropped, Malik might be a nice replacement for him?

I was thinking the same as well. If the Canucks acquire another d-man, UFA or not, I think Malik should be traded. Not because I don't like him, but he would essentially become the Canucks 7th d-man, and at his salary, he's just too expensive to be a depth guy. I don't think the Sabres would have much interest in Malik though, at least not as the main part of Zhitnik trade. They'll likely look to trade Zhitnik for picks/prospects, help the re-building process.

doubt a deal this big ever happens though - but the pieces are there to help both teams... the Canucks IMO address all their holes if they add Satan, Brown and Zhitnik and only take out Malik, Chubarov and May from the lineup (plus futures of course like 1st, Koltsov and Fedorov).

That would be awesome if the Canucks could get Brown, Zhitnik and Satan while only subtracting Malik, Chubarov, and May from the line-up. Fills all three of the Canucks major needs(secondary scoring, shutdown center to allow Linden to move to the wing, another top 3 d-man). Imagine a line-up like this:
Naslund-Morrison-Bertuzzi
D.Sedin-H.Sedin-Satan
Arvedson/Cooke-Brown-Linden
Cooke/Arvedson-Keane/Kesler-Keane/Ruutu
Ohlund-Sopel
Zhitnik-Jovo
Allen-Salo
*drool*
They wouldn't be adding too much salary either. Zhitnik's contract would be mostly paid for by the deadline, he'd still be owed between $500,000-1 mil, basically the salary the Canucks saved by trading Slegr. Chubarov, May and Malik come close to Satan's salary, so it would be just Brown's $1.6 mil that would have to be fit into the budget. The question is, would Buffalo do it? I suspect not.
In the end it would be a big, unlikely deal, but interesting nontheless:
To Vancouver
Miro Satan
Alexei Zhitnik
Curtis Brown
To Buffalo
Marek Malik
Artem Chubarov
Brad May
Kirill Koltsov
1st round pick
Fedor Fedorov
