I've seen a fair bit of both in the west (Sydor with Dallas, Hammer with EDM) and I think they're pretty close. As you say Hammer is certainly more physical but Sydor is much better on the powerplay IMO. Defensively I don't think they are far off. I don't think you read much of anything into his +/- numbers this season. It usually takes guys a bit to acclimatize to a new team and Columbus is not great defensively overall.
I think you underrate Sydor.
