It's all about controlling your assets in the modern NHL. There's no reason to let Callahan or Girardi go elsewhere. They aren't going to get max contracts. They'll get more than most people think they should because that's the nature of contracts for players who are going to be free agents. You sign them because your team is better with them and they provide trade chips for the future.

That doesn't mean they can't be traded. If someone ponies up enough I'd trade either but it needs to be a substantial package to get a top pair Dman who eats up minutes or a winder who plays a gritty, two-way game and can put up close to 30 goals.
