If you accept the common logic that Samsonov is overpaid, this still isn't better than picks for LA. Trade the guys for picks, and go get someone better than Samsonov in the UFA market next year with the 4.9 they would save against the cap. I maintain that LA would rather get a bag of pucks than what the habs are offering. I'm sure most LA fans would agree with me.
Yes, picks or prospects are more likely. Young NHL players, too, but no one ever likes trading those players in these hypotheticals.

The Kings' GM admits that he covets young, talented defensemen first and foremost. Like what he did to get Jack Johnson, you could very well see a package of NHL players to get a high-level prospect. And as bad as the goalie situation is now, the future in net is Jonathan Bernier and its unlikely that this long-term plan would be changed via trade when there are other holes to fill.
