I have to wear a neck guard to ref (I generally don't wear one to play) and use a Bauer performance shirt with a built in thin Kevlar neck guard like this: http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=BPLSI

If you weren't planning on buying a new shirt and just wanted a neck guard there are a few thinner Kevlar options:

The Bauer NK20: http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=B20NG
Easton EQ5: http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=EQ5N
Reebok 11K: http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=R11NG
Shock Doctor Ultra: http://www.icewarehouse.com/descpage.html?pcode=SDKNG

These new performance Kevlar neck guards (and the ones built into the Bauer shirts) are all way more comfortable then the traditional foam style and aren't that much more expensive. The traditional ones are around $10 and you can pick up the separate Bauer or Easton Kevlar version for $15. The extra $5 is definitely worth it from a comfort perspective.
