This is the one sport where teams can come out of nowhere. There have been a half dozen losses this year where if you switched the goalies we would have won. Hank has been medicore. That doesn't mean he stays medicore all year.

So rather than take a run with one of the best goalies in the world in his prime, you'd rather:
Trade Girardi to Anaheim for a low 1st?
Trade Callahan somewhere for a 1st.

If you look at what rentals have fetched over the past 5 years, this idea of getting two elite prospects for Girardi or Callahan is a pipe dream.

The Rangers SHOULD absolutely be exploring trade options for these guys (and everyone else for that matter). If they were able to get an NHL ready players (top 6 forwards or top 4 Dmen) under contractural control for either of those guys, then I would not be against making the deal. That would be good asset management.
Trading Dan Girardi for Emerson Etem and the 28th pick is not the direction we should be going.
