I think the Balej vs Dagenais debate underscores an important point. Neither one brings a physical element or very good defensive awareness. It's too easy to focus on what each brings, but the more important thing is that neither addresses what the team really needs, which is of course size and toughness to play on one of the top 2 lines.

Balej will be good, one day, and Dagenais will manage to score around 20 goals a year playing a regular shift alongside Ribeiro. But I don't think either one really helps this team, for now. A line of Ribeiro Balej and Dagenais, in the middle of a playoff race, is grossly unsatisfactory.

Maybe in future the Habs can get away with a super-talented, if undersized top 2 lines, but it is absolutely necessary to compensate with a big checking center. As it is, the Habs are an incomplete team and will struggle just to make the playoffs, whether Dagenais or Balej or both play in the top 6.
