Being-at-his-best comes at huge cost to any pro athlete. Just think about what baseball players used to do, they harmed their health for it!
I don't know what Lundqvist does, as a fan I obviously want him to literally kill himself for my team with whatever, yet once I take my Ranger jersey off I realize it is a crazy thoughts. So to answer your question I'd say he withheld nothing. But he didn't force himself over the edge like he might have done at the time the desperate team needed it in Oct.-Nov.
In my opinion Biron retirement was a brilliant move by the Rangers. That and Sather giving up on contract helped us very much.
