In MLB,a team will give another team permission to discuss contract with the player only after the teams have agreed on trade compensation. They request a 72 hour window from the MLB commissioner's office. Johan Santana, Curt Schilling. Buffalo could be willing to give Callahan $7M per for 7 years in the summer and they don't want to trade assets for him. Just because the Rangers want Callahan to sign a contract with another team so they get more in the trade doesn't mean Bartlett/Callahan have to play along. They play out the year wherever that is and they negotiate the contract in July.
Possible. But the more likely scenario is that Callahan has a list of teams he likes. Teams will be pitching him like they would July 1. If Buffalo doesn't want to trade assets that's fine, another team will.
