They desperately need help up front, as not only are they weak, but they are hampered by unjuries.

Here is why they would take Perreault, he is a temporary centre who has the potential to put up good numbers. They can probably re-sign him for much less in the off-season if they want to.

Why the Habs would do it, is basically simple. They are always looking to improve their D. Meanwhile they don't give anything dramatic up front.

Milroy is from Alberta and would be a nice addition, and his recent good play in the AHL is only bringing his value up.

Commodore isn't all that good.

The Flames are in the midst of a playoff race and don't have another defenseman to replace Gauthier at this point, which is why the 'deal' seems like a reach unless Montreal were to deal a defenseman back. I don't think Calgary would be eager to have either Commodore or Montador in the top six rotation along with Ference if they are buckling down for a playoff race.

Gauthier's value is hard to guage. He's a #4 in a system that suits him and a #5 league-wide, but he adds a unique element to his game that could drive up his value. You may be right that it would only cost Perreault and Milroy, but I would be surprised. Given the lack of hard hitting defensemen in the league, I would think teams would overpay for Gauthier.
